About Helen T. Gelhot, M.D.

Since opening her practice in 2008, Dr. Gelhot has come to appreciate the value of traditional allopathic medicine, as well as a more integrative, functional, and precise approach. Dr. Gelhot treats the "whole person", not just their symptoms. By taking a more personal approach to healthcare, Dr. Gelhot helps her patients focus on prevention and wellness to achieve optimal health. Besides running her medical practice, Dr. Gelhot is a Catholic Christian wife and mother. 

She has been involved in medicine since high school when she served thousands of hours as a volunteer "candy-striper" at Barnes Hospital. She entered nursing school right out of high school at the Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis. Throughout her nursing training, Dr. Gelhot served as a nurse's aide and a practical nurse. After receiving her R.N. diploma, she pursued pre-medical studies. 

Dr. Gelhot received her M.D. from Wright State University School of Medicine in 1987. She then interned at Jewish Hospital of Cinncinati in General Surgery, followed by Anesthesia at Vanderbilt University.

She completed her formal education after residencies for Internal Medicine at Forest Park Hospital and Saint Louis University. Additionally, she has completed thousands of hours of continuing medical education. Dr. Gelhot has sought mentorship and trained under notable physicians with expertise in subjects including neurology (Dale Bredesen, M.D.), cardiology - BaleDoneen Method (Bradley Dale, M.D.), endocrinology (EJ Cunningham, M.D.), cardiology (Joseph Shen, M.D.), and genomics (Sharon Hausman-Cohen, M.D.). 

Dr. Gelhot's inspiration to begin Advanced Wellness Medical came from working as a young doctor in practices that were not owned by a physician. These practices, like many large corporate medical systems today, were run primarily as businesses with tight revenue constraints under the insurance reimbursement model. Dr. Gelhot was faced with the unreasonable demand of seeing upwards of 50 patients a day, leaving no time for a meaningful visit for the patient. In fact, she was told that during each visit, the patient was only allowed to discuss one problem or ask one question, which of course left a lot of important information out of the picture.

The approach at Advanced Wellness Medical sets these constraints aside by giving each patient the time they need. We schedule appointments for as long as necessary to create a clear understanding of the problems and questions at hand in the context of a patient's full history.  Many root causes are invisible without looking at your DNA. We use a simple cheek swab to gather a sample of your genes, which oftentimes holds the answer. (We maintain a paper medical record to protect your privacy.) Our diagnostic process, in contrast to many large insurance-based systems, is more thorough yet avoids unnecessary testing.

For Dr. Gelhot the patient-doctor relationship is sacred. She serves the patient, not anyone else. She does not aim to fill any quotas or to please hospital administators or pharmaceutical companies. This is the view adopted by the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) which began in 1943 to preserve this idealogy.
